This Saturday or by Appointment:A Photographic Series of a Yoga Body, “Witness to Sadhana”

yoga-pics-053-ms-copyOn display now is a new photographic series by Heather Speer Photography.  This is a black and white series of A Yoga Body, “Witness to Sadhana,” featuring Jan Pendleton of Lake Wylie’s Riverbirch YogaThe works are in display this Saturday, January 8, during Second Saturday Market Time, which is from 10-11 am.  If this Second Saturday doesn’t work, one can also set up a viewing by appointment. Simply contact Heather Speer or Jan Pendleton at Riverbirch Yoga.  Of course, if you would like to attend a yoga class while there, that can also be arranged!  Classes are offered on Tuesdays and Thursday evenings at 6pm.  However, please call Jan first for availability.

When asked how she felt about the process of being a model for this project and on how the photos turned out, Jan’s remarks are as follows…

“Heather is not only a most gifted artist, but she’s a tender and caring photographer to work with.  She encouraged me to just do what I do naturally and she was there witnessing my presence.  That made this experience so very special on many levels.  In Yoga, we study “the Witness,” – that part of our consciousness that can step back from our usual way of looking at ourselves and the world around us as well as what our senses tell us … and can “see” all expressions of ourselves.  These photos have that capacity for me.  When I look at them, I don’t see a body in postures really……I am seeing a devotional and spiritual presence that I know and celebrate within myself….it is what I teach and what I strive to share with everyone.  These photos convey Yoga in the bigger and deeper sense…they convey My Yoga, My Sadhana, My Path.  The Sanscrit word Sadhana means basically Path and Practices….My Path as well as THE PATH…..and The Practices that bring me back to awareness of My Path.  When I look at the photos, I feel myself called to Sadhana, I see My Sadhana expressed.  They inspire and move me.  They remind and speak to me of the quiet sweet presence of Oneness.

This was all a huge surprise to me once I saw what Heather produced.  I guess I might have expected simply body in motion or body in positions.  What I see there is a stillness and deep, deep presence that I honor and practice and for which I am dearly grateful.  Thank you, Heather, for Witnessing for me!”                                   – Jan Pendleton, Riverbirch Yoga

Heather is humbled and thankful for the experience of working with Jan.  For Heather as well, these images go beyond postures and pictures of a body…they are a deeper insight.

Heather and Jan hope that you can make it out to see the exhibit Saturday during Market time, but if not, call for appointment.

Also, the exhibition is open for scheduling, so if you would like to see “Witness to Sadhana” presented in another space soon, please let Heather know.

Happy New Year!

Artist Consults with Fort Mill AP Art Students

Fort Mill/Tega Cay Artist and Art Educator Heather Speer surveying the growth of a young artist.

Heather Speer, Tega Cay/Fort Mill artist, photographer, and art educator has been teaming up with Fort Mill High School’s Art Educator Judi Vokes.  The two have coordinated two sessions during which Heather Speer has come into the AP Art class to provide critique, consultation, and individual discussion with the AP students.  AP Art stands for Advanced Placement Art, a high level course that is offered to students who qualify.  It is rigorous and challenging.  In the spring, AP culminates when the students send in their portfolios to the AP Board for judging.  Depending on the score, students will receive college class credit.  This definitely provides a leg up to entry level college students–not to mention that it’s less expensive than taking the class in college.  AP is not for the faint of heart.  It is a year long process that requires diligence and hard work.

Heather Speer, who taught at Fort Mill High School, is at home in Ms. Vokes’ art room.  She shared it while she worked there.  After teaching at FMHS, she went to the middle school level where she taught several of the AP Students that she is now consulting.  “It is refreshing to be in an environment where the students are all focused on their art.  They want to learn and they are truly interested in what I have to say.  They realize the importance of their art.”

“I am so happy to see these young people again and to discover how they have grown and developed as people and as artists.  It makes me proud. Read the rest of this entry »
